KARACHI ART SUMMIT

KARACHI ART SUMMIT 2017 , From 21st March to 8th April 2017 ; Curated by Mehreen Hashmi, organized by Spaces gallery and sponsored by Faysal Bank.

Karachi Art Summit is the first ever art summit of Pakistan, it is an event that brings together artists and innovators from the city to come forth and contribute their artworks to embellish their city. The project has been created to evoke the contradictions and ambiguities of our time at exhibitions, site-specific interventions, and a wealth of broad platforms and community interaction that reaches the core of the city. By taking art to communities and institutions, via radio, television and print media, Karachi Art Summit aims to reach at least a quarter of the city’s population over a span of two weeks. The main goal of Karachi Art Summit is to bring visual art into public spaces to invite, encourage, and even impose public engagement on the audience. Projects will be created to interact with the viewers to create a stage that is autonomous and reachable.

In Karachi Art Summit, besides various site-specific installations and sculptures, there are two curatorial projects, more than 80 artists including 34 international artists, three talks and five performances Artists from other countries are also participating with their curatorial projects. Few artists are travelling from Lahore as well as Hyderabad in order to install their work on the sites. All the sites are outdoors and will encourage public to interact and experience contemporary art. Our sites include National Museum, Art Council, Kothari Parade,  Commune Artist colony, Fomma art trust, Goethe Institute, Alliance Francaise de Karachi, Karachi University, Iqra University, Frere Hall, Quaid-e-Azam House and Free Mason’s Lodge. These venues are main historical buildings of Karachi and are open for general public. Site-specific installations and few monumental pieces of sculpture has been installed to engage our general public who are not familiar with contemporary art and role of art in general. These majorly crowded public spaces in all over Karachi will create a new trend of visiting art galleries and learn to understand art in future.
